the-eyes-and-ears asked you: «Lord Starscream. I am ready to depart for the mission at your earliest convenience.»

"I’ll leave it to your judgment whether or not you should communicate with them. Considering that you’re on the same ship as Ratbat, it seems inevitable that at some point you two will at least cross paths, and it wouldn’t make sense to simply ignore him,” Starscream said.

"Is his role in Lord Megatron’s death not enough? Honestly, Soundwave, I’m surprised you need to ask.” He scowled. “Even putting that aside, though—he himself has willingly distanced himself from the Decepticons. Which is just as well; if he wanted to come back, I wouldn’t let him.”

«Of course, Lord Starscream.» Soundwave paused, trying to decide how to word his next sentences. «I was merely trying to discern what types of information he might be gathering. If he were gathering data for another faction, it might be primarily information on security and troop movements, for example.»

«But very well. I believe that once I read the Ratbat’s file, I will initiate contact with him. I will keep you updated, as often as you wish.»

«Is there anything else?»

"Hmph. He’s no Autobot, I can say that much. Although he’s certainly tried to get friendly with a few,” Starscream said. “At this point, he’s more or less rogue—unaligned with any faction. More interested in his own security than anything else.”

Starscream shook his head. “No, nothing else. Just be careful when you initiate contact with Ratbat.”

«I see. That likely widens the field of data he will be motivated to acquire.» Soundwave made a mental note to keep a look out for that Soundwave, and to look through his past encounters with his alternates.

«I have one final inquiry of you before beginning the assignment. It is merely a request to clarify your last statement.»

the-eyes-and-ears:

«Hmm.»

There was no symbiont Ratbat in his universe. There was the Senator Ratbat, of course, and Soundwave planned on digging up all the information stored in his processor.

«I would like a copy of those files before I begin.»

«Am I also to assume I am not to have contact with either that Soundwave or Ratbat?»

«Finally…Lord Starscream…may I ask why that Soundwave is no longer with us? Is it simply because of his role in Lord Megatron’s demise?»

"I’ll leave it to your judgment whether or not you should communicate with them. Considering that you’re on the same ship as Ratbat, it seems inevitable that at some point you two will at least cross paths, and it wouldn’t make sense to simply ignore him,” Starscream said.

«…»

Interesting.

Soundwave considered it for a long moment. Several long moments. He wasn’t entirely sure, of course. It was the first strictly-surveillance task he had been assigned to in…months.

«I believe I will be able to complete the task successfully.»

«Does he have any knowledge of the alternate Soundwaves? Or of alternate universes?»

«I would also like to request all data on Ratbat and his carrier that is not in the warship’s archives.»

"Quite a bit of knowledge, unfortunately," Starscream said. "He was the first Decepticon in our timeline to discover the multiverse, and spent months in it before the rest of us. Ratbat has less knowledge—he was several million years dead until recently, and hasn’t quite caught up on all he missed—but he’s bright and I’m certain Soundwave has been catching him up.”

Starscream nodded. “Fortunately, I recently compiled a record of everything I personally know about Ratbat.” He’d given that file away, but it wouldn’t be difficult to compile it again. “It will take more time to get that information on Soundwave, but I can get you that soon enough.”

«Hmm.»

«It is…no matter.»

He’s slightly annoyed at the lie, but the idea of espionage—no matter how minor—is much more intriguing.

«But I am eager to hear more, Lord Starscream.»

It’s been a while since he’s been able to spy with the challenge of getting caught.

"You know of my timeline’s Soundwave, yes? The treacherous one who helped orchestrate our master’s demise?” Starscream sneered at the mere thought of him. Pah. “Due to unfortunate political circumstances far beyond my control, he is not only still alive, but also all but untouchable. However, just because we can’t do anything about him doesn’t mean we have to sit back and let him do whatever it is he wants.

"To that end—he’s sent one of his Minicons to the Nemesis as an… ambassador of sorts. Ratbat. Ratbat and I are personally friends, and I’m certain that he serves his Soundwave quite unwillingly, so I don’t want to evict him, much less openly act against him—which I’m sure is exactly what his Soundwave is counting on. However, I don’t like the security threat that Ratbat poses to the Nemesis.

"I’ve no doubt that Soundwave sent Ratbat to spy on us. And to some extent, we’ll simply have to let him, because preventing him will simply drive Soundwave to find another method to do so—a method which might not be so easily manipulated by us. However, we can control and taint the information that Ratbat takes back to Soundwave. In doing so, we may at least ensure that Soundwave doesn’t have a completely accurate picture of what’s happening on this ship.

"And although it’s obvious enough that Soundwave is having Ratbat send him information on our actions… I don’t know what else he has Ratbat here for. Surely he has his agent performing more than one task, but thus far I don’t know what. I want you to find out what it is without letting Ratbat, much less Soundwave himself, discover that you’re trying.

"Thus, the target of your espionage will be a version of you yourself and his agent. You will need to control what information he has access to, discover his goals on this ship, and do all that without ever allowing him to discover that you’re doing so.

"Do you think you’re up to the task?"

And to Soundwave’s coordinates Starscream goes.

"Good. Here we go, then." He opened a ground bridge down to Cybertron—his own Soundwave had explained to him some time ago how to open personal ground bridges without needing to hook into the ship’s system—and he gestured Soundwave through. "After you."

Once Soundwave passes through, he will discover that they are not, in fact, in Vos, but on the Hydrax Plateau. A space port in the middle of the Sea of Rust. Starscream passes through soon after Soundwave and immediately turns off the ground bridge.

Soundwave goes first.

He is surprised, of course, to see they are not in Vos. The optimistic part of his processor tells him it could be Vos, if Vos has turned into the Sea of Rust.

«…Lord Starscream? Is something wrong?»

"Nothing’s wrong," Starscream said. "My apologies for deceiving you about our destination, Soundwave, but I wanted to minimize the chances of anyone on the ship catching wind of the real purpose of our exchange—much less of their being able to follow and eavesdrop. My true mission for you is quite a bit more important than simply checking out a communications array—and it’s also one that is to be kept top secret. It’s a matter of minor espionage against one of the ship’s part-time residents.”

«It is…no matter.»

Wait, that was a dumb question; Starscream was in the bridge. If Soundwave was there, he could just look around and find him.
